Who can turn the world on with her smile?
Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?
Well it's you girl, and you should know it
With each glance and every little movement you show it.
Love is all around, no need to waste it
You can have the town, why don't you take it?
You're gonna make it after all.
-- Love Is All Around (Mary Tyler Moore Show Theme, written and performed by Sonny Curtis)
Anyone who watched the quintessential 1970's sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show remembers the opening credits, a montage showing character Mary Richards in various places around Minneapolis, the setting of the show. The freeze-frame moment in which Mary exuberantly tosses her cap in the air on a downtown street has become an iconic image in pop-culture. This sculpture by Gwendolyn Gillen was dedicated in 2002 at the downtown Minneapolis intersection where the famous scene was filmed.
