A high mountain lake, late in the afternoon when the light is indirect and soft. The marina is closed for the day, and the rows of tied-up paddleboats, canoes and rowboats are an opportunity to photograph undisturbed. I circle the dock, clicking away. From this particular angle, these rowboats seemed to be stacked upon each other. I go to telephoto mode to isolate them from the surroundings; in the viewfinder I arrange a painterly composition of angles and colors. As I press the shutter button I get that feeling that all photographers strive for: I have taken the elements of the scene and transformed them into an evocative image.
