The Mojave Desert of Southern California is full of flat areas called "playas" that were once lakes in the wetter days of the ice ages.
I camped near this one just after a major storm had passed through the area. On a pre-dawn stroll, I discovered that the normally-dry lakebed was covered in water about an inch deep. The rocks scattered across its surface seemed to float in the reflection of the sky.
