Jagged Sun

The inversion layers which often occur in the Los Angeles basin can trap clouds or smog in sharply-defined layers. These layers also cause refraction which can distort the image of the setting sun. This photo shows an accordion-shaped sun setting into the Pacific Ocean beyond the smokestack of a coastline power plant.
