Star Trek Rarities

Unused Scenes, Bloopers, Special Effects, and Other Treasures from the Original Series!

Disclaimer: These images are faded and scratched because they are scanned from original 35mm film that came from the cutting room floor 40 years ago! To my knowledge, these images are not copyrighted.

The Enemy Within: William Shatner's stand-in takes a break on the set.

[trekgalileo1.jpg]
The Galileo Seven: It was felt that the ape-men terrorizing the shuttle crew would be more terrifying if they were never clearly seen, so this close-up was never used (except in the ending credits for some episodes). The less-than-adequate make-up job probably also influenced the decision!

[trekcourtm1.jpg]
Court Martial: In a dramatic courtroom scene, the distinguished lawyer Samuel T. Cogley (Elisha Cook Jr.) sticks his tongue out.

[trekmenage1.jpg]
The Menagerie: Soundstage set; an alien cityscape will be matted in behind the wall later.

[trektaste1.jpg]
A Taste of Armageddon: Another set before the background is matted in. Hmmm ... haven't I seen that wall on another planet?

[trekalter1.jpg]
The Alternative Factor: Kirk (William Shatner) on the "limbo" set. Psychedelic optical effects will be added later to represent a disorienting transition between universes. Many viewers felt just as disoriented trying to follow this episode's plot!

[trekspaces2.jpg]
Space Seed: The Enterprise with Khan's ship, being filmed in front of a blue screen so that the stars can be matted in later. This "big" model of the Enterprise (smaller versions were also used in filming) now resides in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC.

[trekcity1.jpg]  [trekcity3.jpg]
City on the Edge of Forever: (1) The Guardian of Forever before special effects are added. (2) The finished shot.

[trekcity2.jpg]
City on the Edge of Forever: Edith Keeler (Joan Collins) checks the script.

[trekwhomou1.jpg]
Who Mourns for Adonais?: Apollo (Michael Forrest) being filmed in front of a blue screen; special effects will make him appear giant-sized as he utters the immortal line "Welcome to Olympus, Captain Kirk!"

[trekamok1.jpg]  [trekamok2.jpg]  [trekamok3.jpg]
Amok Time: The Enterprise's "automatic" doors (actually manually operated by a hidden stage hand) didn't always work on cue. This one closes too early, and catches Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley).

[trekelaan1.jpg]
Elaan of Troyius: Spock plays his Vulcan harp in the recreation room, in a scene that was filmed but never used.

[trekspock1.jpg]
Spock's Brain: Spock (Leonard Nimoy) clowns around with handcuffs and a gun. The newspaper headline reads "Spock Gets 2-Year Prison Term, Fine ... for Anti-draft Activities" -- referring to the June 1968 conviction of controversial pediatrician Dr. Benjamin Spock (the verdict was later reversed on appeal).

[trekwhomg1.jpg]  [trekwhomg2.jpg]
Whom Gods Destroy: (1) Filming a split-screen shot with a stand-in. (2) The finished shot with 2 Kirks.

[trekcloud1.jpg]  [trekcloud2.jpg]
The Cloud Minders: (1) Kirk and Spock gaze at a model of the cloud city; note the edges of the sky backdrop. (2) The finished shot.

[trekunk1.jpg]
Unknown episode: I don't know who or what this is. Could be a make-up test.

This page is dedicated to the memory of DeForest Kelley, 1920 - 1999.[trekkelley2.jpg]
